Irish Hunger Memorial

Description

The Irish Hunger Memorial is located at the corner of Vesey Street and North End Avenue in Battery Park. It is dedicated to the Irish Famine of 1849 and was designed by Artist Brian Tolle. The memorial is landscaped with stones, soil and native vegetation transported from the western coast of Ireland. It contains stones from all of the Counties of Ireland. When water leakage into mechanical spaces below developed, Nicholson & Galloway was contracted to perform the following work:

  • 3,010 square feet of soil removal and re-installation
  • 3,375 square feet of stone wall dismantling and rebuilding
  • 500 linear feet of cable railing
  • 1,000 square feet of concrete chemical cleaning
  • 10,000 square feet of custom grown plants, soil and irrigation system
  • 10,000 square feet of Kemper waterproofing
  • 3,010 square feet of pebble pavement
