Description: Stone Restoration Project
Types of work: Stone setting, stone pinning,
repointing, clock restoration, wood restoration
Details:
Nicholson & Galloway completed a comprehensive
restoration of this church located in Goshen, New York.
Constructed of a shale and sandstone blend, the Church has
a 180 foot tower and is the tallest building in Orange County.
Much
of the existing stone on the building was delaminating,
requiring the installation of over 2,000 stainless steel
pins. In addition, the stone restoration consisted of taking
down and rebuilding the top fifteen feet of the tower, and
cutting and pointing all mortar joints. Approximately 20
percent of the mortar joints required deep grouting to fill
voids in the wall.
Four
clocks located on all sides of the tower were removed and
restored. The clock faces were stripped, consolidated and
re-painted in place. All interior wood deck levels in the
tower were demolished and replaced with new decks.
Window
and door frames were stripped, consolidated and re-painted
in place. Stained glass windows in the tower were removed
and restored in a studio. New protective glazing was installed
in all openings before reinstalling the original stained
glass. With the exception of the stained glass, all work
was supervised and performed by Nicholson & Galloway's
own personnel. |
